Every bridge player knows the frustration of having winners ready to cash — but no way to reach them. These two intermediate lessons focus on one of the most important (and most overlooked) skills in card play: managing communication between your hands.
Across the two sessions, we’ll explore how thoughtful ducking and effective unblocking can keep you in control of your entries, allowing you to reach the right hand at the right time. You’ll see how these techniques turn potential disasters into well‑timed, well‑executed contracts. Lesson 1:  We begin with the essentials of ducking and unblocking in declarer play, with clear examples showing when and why these techniques matter. We’ll also look briefly at how the same ideas can help defenders. Lesson 2:  The second session focuses on unblocking from a defensive perspective — a skill that can dramatically improve partnership defence. We’ll also revisit how these principles support declarer play. If you want to strengthen your card‑play technique and improve your control of the hand, these lessons will be well worth attending.  

About Alan Grant

Alan Grant is one of New Zealand’s most popular and respected bridge teachers. Having taught beginners through expert players since the 1980s, Alan is a respected presenter at the New Zealand National Congress and has played a key role in the redevelopment of NZ Bridge’s teaching materials. Alan finds teaching deeply rewarding, and his students frequently commend him for his clear instruction, structured guidance, and supportive learning environment. As a player, Alan has a long and impressive record at both national and international level. He represented New Zealand six times in the Bermuda Bowl and Asia Pacific Championships as part of the Open team between 1997 and 2008. More recently, he has competed internationally in the Mixed and Seniors categories, including representing New Zealand Seniors at the 2019 international events and again at the 2024 World Bridge Games in Buenos Aires.
